Hair and fur is not uniform in the nature. Sthe strands tend to be thinner at their tip. You can achivieve this effect in Ornatrix quite simple. As stated by Marsel in the basic hair tutorial: In the material dialog, put a new gradient ramp map for the thickness channel. Because the thickness decreases along hair length, we need the gradient to change along the W coordinate. We also need it to go from white (thick) to black (thin) colors. You can see the gradient i used behind the hair. Obviously you can do alot more with this channel.

You can use for your map - as it is possible in any other channel - also other UVW directions. Hier the hair follows the gradient - from thicker to thinner strands. Check out this method a furball, apply for the dynamics a garvitational force and let the thinner hairs fall over the thicker hairs. Makes fun. But i will not do this in this tutorial - i have a furball allergy. |

Let's see how the thickness reacts, if we apply a leght channel to the material. Well nothing spectacular, just as we would aspect - and that's great then the thickness schould react as aspected. Ofcourse you can do a lot of fancy stuff with different combinations. Let your imagination play - and remember to post your results in the Ornatrix forum. We would like to participate. |

The picture on the left shows what you can achieve with a simple gradient for thickness and a simple noise map applyed in the lenght channel. Quite fancy, uh? Now let's apply a little bit of color and clumping and other woodoo.... |

And again: Ofcourse you can make realy weird things with simple methods. Not very usefull what you see - but it's fun to see what can be done. So let's step over to another woodoo. |
